Project G

My fingers and bedsheets smell of garlic. So do the mouths of my two boys, the older Garlic King and the younger Garlic Prince.

The weekend started with me kicking off 'Project G'. 'G' for Garlic. This is 1 brave step we decided to take as part of the initiative to wean the Prince off the pacifier. Research on the web has mentioned steps including letting the child have a favourite toy, and/or not give the child the pacifier and bear with the crying for a few days. The garlic suggestion came from an ex-mid wife and also my ex colleague who has tried that before. Both said it's a 100% foolproof way to help the child kick the habit.

We had wanted to try this when the Prince was 1 year old, but decided to let him continue with his indulgence till he's 18 months. Now that he's past 18 months and the pacifiers are getting really worn out, plus we finally have a long weekend with no major plans (no travelling, no change of routine, etc), Hubby allowed me to put the theory to test.

The Prince wailed his heart out during his morning nap, partly because he was over-tired and he came back from receiving a jab on his thigh from the PD's. He spat the pacifier out several times, demanded to be carried but eventually laid down on our bed and took the pacifier in order to fall asleep. That's when my bedsheets caught the stench of garlic when we placed the pacifier on them.

During the 2nd nap and the bedtime routine, the Prince readily accepted the pacifier, to both my disbelief and dismay. Thus, I decided to call him the 'Garlic Prince'. I am prepared that this method may not work, after I realised how much the father takes to garlic. Perhaps it's in the genes!!

We were at Fish & Co for dinner earlier, and Hubby consumed 3 full servings of raw garlic (I think the equivalent of 8 cloves), alongside with his seafood. Concluded he wins the title 'Garlic King' hands-down. In fact, to think about it, the Prince loves to drink 'Bak Kut Teh' (pork based soup boiled with garlic, spices and a hint of pepper) so he may love garlic after all.

I must highlight that Aidan does have a favourite sleep toy. I said 'sleep' toy because he needs the toy before he goes to bed but doesn't want it anywhere near him when he's playing or out of the bedroom. It's Gibra, as you most will already know by now. So you see, it's not really fair because nowadays, the Prince not only has 'Gi-Gi' in his arms when he sleeps, he demands the pacifier and in recent weeks, for someone, i.e. me or Hubby to pat his backside while he falls asleep!

Besides the major event of Project G being in progress (supposed to see 'results' in 3 days' time), The Prince went on a walking strike today. His left leg must be sore from the injection, he whines every time he wakes up from his naps and refused to let his feet touch the ground. We concluded that it is not a serious problem because he forgets his discomfort when he's standing at the balcony playing with the wind, or watching Thomas the Train on TV. But the moment we stepped into the mall, he insisted he wanted to be carried all the way. (Told hubby we didn't have to let him wear shoes at all today)

One cute thing the Prince did today was make his father walk to the LRT (train) station, instead of driving there. Our son loves taking rides inside the LRT (the only advantage of staying in CCK) so Hubby took him for a ride after lunch. My jaw dropped when Hubby said he wanted to drive the car and park it at the station, because honestly the station is only a stone's throw away from our apartment.

Guess Prince agreed with Mummy, because he refused to get into the car. He screamed when Daddy mistook that as a sign he wanted to go home and was turning towards the lift. He pointed towards the far end of the car park, and after Daddy brought him to the ground floor, he pointed excitedly at the train station in front of him. 3 Cheers for Aidan, and a sympathy pat for Daddy who didn't expect he had to carry 13kg from the doorstep all the way onto the train and back.

Long weekend ahead, it's fantastic. Plan is to go to the market tomorrow, pick up some meat and I'm gonna grill some Honey-mustard chicken for dinner and make Prince some salmon rosti, catch up with the IH college gang. Monday, it's off to see Baby Hanna Grace and more catching with friends. Beautiful..!!
